It's important knows tones pattern for playing melody. You don't have to remember all of the tones pattern, because there are so many tones patterned. But, you should know and remember the basic tones pattern.
The basic tones pattern of C tone are C - D - E - F - G - A - B
We can see that there are seven tones on the tones pattern of C tone, and that is the basic one that you should know.
On the 2nd string, from the 1st fret until the 12th fret there will be seven tones of the C tone.
On the 3rd string, from the 1st fret until the 12th fret there will be seven tones of the C tone.
On the 4th string, from the 1st fret until the 12th fret there will be seven tones of the C tone.
On the 5th string, from the 1st fret until the 12th fret there will be seven tones of the C tone.
On the 6th string, from the 1st fret until the 12th fret there will be seven tones of the C tone.
From all of that, now we know the basic tones pattern consist of seven tones.
